Research source vs practitioner report

By the end of this lesson

  • Distinguish source types and what they support
  • Separate popularity from experimental control
  • Preserve context in practitioner reports

See it

Peer-reviewed research and practitioner experience can both be valuable, but they answer different questions. A practitioner report can reveal real-world usability; a controlled study may provide stronger evidence about a defined treatment comparison.

Understand it

Distinguish source types and what they support

Label source type visibly.

Practitioner experience can provide useful practical evidence while retaining its local context and source type.

Separate popularity from experimental control

Do not let popularity substitute for experimental control.

Controls and defined outcomes strengthen a specific comparison without making it universally transferable.

Preserve context in practitioner reports

Practitioner outcomes are strongest when plant and protocol context are recorded.

Source labels should describe the origin of the evidence rather than the number of endorsements.

Worked example

A grower's useful account describes a local workflow. A controlled study compares a defined treatment. Both can inform decisions, but the local account should not be relabeled as peer-reviewed research merely because many people endorse it.

Explain your decision before opening the worked reasoning below.

Show the worked reasoning

Context makes a report inspectable and comparable; reputation alone cannot supply the missing details.

A source citation does not make every changed local instruction identical to the study it references.

Important boundary

Do not call a community report ‘research-sourced’ unless it actually derives from reviewed research.

Try it

How should the example's grower account be labeled?

Use the worked example above to explain your answer in your own words before taking the quiz.

Lesson quiz

Assessment version: 2026-10-15-v2. Previous reading-completion markers are retained. This revised quiz has its own result.

Apply it

Use the worked example to write a short decision record: what did you observe, which rule did you apply, and what would you check before acting?

Completion marks reading progress, not a quiz pass or professional certification.
