Anatomy of a tissue-culture paper

By the end of this lesson

  • Read material and methods before extracting values
  • Connect treatments to outcomes
  • Evaluate whether a study addresses your objective

See it

A useful paper contains more than a final recipe. Read the plant material and methods: species, cultivar/genotype, explant, donor conditions, stage, basal medium, PGRs, culture environment, sample size, experimental design, outcome measures, and statistics.

Understand it

Read material and methods before extracting values

Read methods before copying numbers from a table.

Methods explain the material, stage, conditions and treatment definitions that give a numerical result meaning.

Connect treatments to outcomes

Identify which treatment produced which outcome.

A result is evidence about a defined treatment and outcome rather than an isolated impressive number.

Evaluate whether a study addresses your objective

Check whether the paper's objective matches yours.

Applicability depends on biological material and goals, not merely the presence of a high count.

Worked example

A table reports a high shoot count, but the methods describe a different explant and objective from your work. Read the material, stage and treatment definitions before treating the largest table value as your recipe.

Explain your decision before opening the worked reasoning below.

Show the worked reasoning

Experimental context determines what a comparison can support and how confidently its outcomes can be interpreted.

Matching the plant is insufficient if the developmental objective and measured outcome answer a different question.

Important boundary

Do not extract a medium formula while ignoring the material and stage used to test it.

What mismatch matters in the example?

Use the worked example above to explain your answer in your own words before taking the quiz.

Lesson quiz

Assessment version: 2026-10-15-v2. Previous reading-completion markers are retained. This revised quiz has its own result.

Apply it

Use the worked example to write a short decision record: what did you observe, which rule did you apply, and what would you check before acting?

Completion marks reading progress, not a quiz pass or professional certification.
