Core vocabulary

By the end of this lesson

  • Define commonly used culture terms
  • Distinguish plant identity from lineage
  • Resolve unfamiliar terms before acting

See it

A small vocabulary makes the rest of the Academy easier: explant, in vitro, aseptic, culture medium, basal medium, plant growth regulator, subculture, initiation, multiplication, rooting, acclimatization, cultivar, and lineage. The goal is not memorization for its own sake; it is precise communication.

Understand it

Define commonly used culture terms

A term should be defined when first introduced and remain consistent across lessons.

Use vocabulary precisely: an explant starts a culture, medium provides culture conditions, and subculture transfers material to fresh conditions.

Distinguish plant identity from lineage

Scientific names and cultivar identities help remove ambiguity.

Lineage preserves descent between cultures and is distinct from location, recipe or taxonomic identity.

Resolve unfamiliar terms before acting

Lineage means preserving the relationship between parent and derived cultures.

A parent-child relationship describes descent; a shelf, fill volume or check date describes a different part of the record.

Worked example

Batch B was derived from Batch A and then moved to Shelf 2. Its lineage is A → B; its location is Shelf 2. Those labels describe different things, and neither replaces the plant's species or cultivar identity.

Explain your decision before opening the worked reasoning below.

Show the worked reasoning

An undefined term can change how a protocol is interpreted, so clarify the term before acting on it.

Scientific names and cultivar labels clarify plant identity, while parent links clarify the culture's lineage.

Important boundary

If a term is unfamiliar, pause and define it rather than guessing from context.

Try it

Which entry records the example's lineage?

Use the worked example above to explain your answer in your own words before taking the quiz.

Lesson quiz

Assessment version: 2026-10-15-v2. Previous reading-completion markers are retained. This revised quiz has its own result.

Apply it

Use the worked example to write a short decision record: what did you observe, which rule did you apply, and what would you check before acting?

Completion marks reading progress, not a quiz pass or professional certification.
