Protocol extraction means reconstructing the relevant treatment and workflow from a source while preserving units, formulations, sequence, stage, and conditions. Tables, footnotes, methods text, and supplementary material may all matter.

Understand it

Reconstruct treatment definitions across a source

Capture exact chemical identity and units.

A treatment definition can be distributed across a paper, so extracting one table cell may omit essential instructions.

Distinguish final concentrations from stock instructions

Record whether values are final-medium concentrations or stock instructions.

Stock instructions and final treatment values describe different quantities and must not be interchanged.

Resolve ambiguity without guessing

Attach the source and page/section details when possible.

The source's definition controls interpretation; ambiguity should not be resolved by guessing.

Worked example

A methods table lists one value while a footnote explains that it is a stock instruction. Preserve the footnote and the relevant preparation step. Do not copy the value into a final-medium field until its basis is clear.

Explain your decision before opening the worked reasoning below.

Show the worked reasoning

Traceability requires enough detail to reconstruct what was extracted and where it came from.

Unresolved source differences should remain explicit rather than being converted into an invented precise instruction.

Important boundary

Never resolve an ambiguous value by guessing.

Try it

What should happen to the example's ambiguous value?

Use the worked example above to explain your answer in your own words before taking the quiz.

Lesson quiz

Assessment version: 2026-10-15-v2. Previous reading-completion markers are retained. This revised quiz has its own result.

Apply it

Use the worked example to write a short decision record: what did you observe, which rule did you apply, and what would you check before acting?

Completion marks reading progress, not a quiz pass or professional certification.
