2.2

Nodes, buds, meristems and crowns

By the end of this lesson

  • Distinguish nodes, buds, meristems and crowns
  • Recognize the context of nodal and meristem culture
  • Use the exact tissue term in a record

See it

Nodes contain attachment points and often axillary buds; shoot tips include actively growing tissue; meristematic regions contain actively dividing cells; crowns are compact growing regions in some plants such as strawberry. These terms are related but not interchangeable.

Understand it

Distinguish nodes, buds, meristems and crowns

A nodal explant can include an axillary bud positioned to develop into a shoot.

Nodes are attachment regions that may carry axillary buds capable of developing into shoots.

Recognize the context of nodal and meristem culture

Meristem culture can be used for specialized objectives and is not the same as ordinary nodal culture.

Meristematic regions contain actively dividing cells; specialized meristem culture should not be equated with any ordinary nodal transfer.

Use the exact tissue term in a record

Crown-based material in strawberry has a different morphology from a simple woody stem node.

A crown has its own morphology, so use the anatomical term supported by the material and protocol.

Worked example

A strawberry crown and a woody stem node are both growing plant structures, but their anatomy differs. A method describing one should not be relabeled as the other merely because both can be starting material.

Explain your decision before opening the worked reasoning below.

Show the worked reasoning

Related plant structures and methods are not interchangeable simply because they can participate in propagation.

Precise tissue naming lets later readers distinguish a nodal method from shoot-tip, crown or specialized meristem work.

Important boundary

Use the exact anatomical term supported by the source or protocol.

Try it

How should the strawberry material in the example be named?

Use the worked example above to explain your answer in your own words before taking the quiz.

Lesson quiz

Assessment version: 2026-10-15-v2. Previous reading-completion markers are retained. This revised quiz has its own result.

Apply it

Use the worked example to write a short decision record: what did you observe, which rule did you apply, and what would you check before acting?

Completion marks reading progress, not a quiz pass or professional certification.
