Preparation overage

By the end of this lesson
- Calculate an explicit percentage allowance
- Separate base and planned volumes
- Distinguish a planning choice from a biological requirement
Examples use a decimal point; a comma groups thousands.
See it
Preparation overage is an intentional extra amount added to compensate for practical losses such as transfer residue. If the base volume is 840 mL and the selected overage is 5%, the planned volume is 882 mL.
Understand it
Calculate an explicit percentage allowance
Overage is a planning choice, not a biological requirement.
Five percent of 840 is 42, so the planned volume is 840 + 42 = 882 mL.
Separate base and planned volumes
Show base volume and overage separately.
Overage is a documented planning choice, such as allowing for transfer residue, not a universal biological need.
Distinguish a planning choice from a biological requirement
Record the selected percentage so the calculation is reproducible.
Showing the base, percentage and planned amount makes the allowance reproducible and inspectable.
Worked example
A run needs 840 mL at the vessels. A selected 5% allowance adds 840 × 0.05 = 42 mL, giving 882 mL planned. A different example, 500 mL with 10%, adds 50 mL for 550 mL planned.
Explain your decision before opening the worked reasoning below.
Show the worked reasoning
Ten percent of 500 is 50; adding it gives 550 mL planned volume.
Convert the percentage to a fraction and add it to one before multiplying by the base volume.
Do not hide overage inside a rounded final number.

How should the example be displayed?
Use the worked example above to explain your answer in your own words before taking the quiz.

Assessment version: 2026-10-15-v2. Previous reading-completion markers are retained. This revised quiz has its own result.
Apply it
Use the worked example to write a short decision record: what did you observe, which rule did you apply, and what would you check before acting?
Completion marks reading progress, not a quiz pass or professional certification.
