MS and WPM

By the end of this lesson
- Distinguish MS and WPM formulations
- Identify full, reduced and modified strengths
- Name modified recipes honestly
See it
Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium is widely used and relatively high in total mineral salts; Woody Plant Medium (WPM) was developed for woody plant culture and differs substantially in nutrient composition. Neither name tells you that the medium is automatically correct for your exact plant.
Understand it
Distinguish MS and WPM formulations
MS and WPM are formulation families with defined components.
MS and WPM differ in nutrient composition; a name does not establish suitability for a particular plant or stage.
Identify full, reduced and modified strengths
Modified versions should be labeled as modifications, not silently called the original.
Strength must refer to a defined formulation and its specified component basis, rather than an unrelated physical quantity.
Name modified recipes honestly
Research may compare full-, half-, or otherwise modified strengths.
Modified formulations must be labeled transparently so readers know they differ from the named original.
Worked example
A recipe uses a reduced-strength MS formulation and additional changes. Label it with those modifications and preserve its version. Calling it simply the original formulation would hide the treatment actually tested.
Explain your decision before opening the worked reasoning below.
Show the worked reasoning
A basal name is not a validation claim for every biological use.
Named families can include different strengths and modifications; compare the actual treatments rather than the shared abbreviation.
A recipe labeled ‘MS’ should not silently contain a materially different formulation.

Which name fits the example?
Use the worked example above to explain your answer in your own words before taking the quiz.
Lesson quiz
Assessment version: 2026-10-15-v2. Previous reading-completion markers are retained. This revised quiz has its own result.
Apply it
Use the worked example to write a short decision record: what did you observe, which rule did you apply, and what would you check before acting?
Completion marks reading progress, not a quiz pass or professional certification.
